Prof. Stefan Diez, managing director and research group leader at the B CUBE – Center for Molecular Bioengineering of TUD Dresden University of Technology, as well as DIGS-BB group leader and vice dean, has been elected to the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). This prestigious membership is a testament to his exceptional research and significant contributions in the field of biophysics. As an EMBO member, Prof. Diez becomes part of an elite network of the world’s best researchers.

EMBO is a prestigious international organization that brings together life scientists. Its mission is to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers and ultimately help build a European research environment that lets scientists achieve their best work.

EMBO membership is a recognition of excellence in the life sciences, and Prof. Diez's election reflects his outstanding scientific achievements. As an EMBO member, he will participate in the EMBO Council, contribute to the evaluation of funding applications, and help mentor young scientists.

“I am deeply honored to have been elected as a member of EMBO,” says Prof. Diez. “I look forward to contributing to the advancement of life sciences and to supporting the next generation of researchers through EMBO’s programs.”

This year, EMBO elected 120 new members. New members are nominated and elected by the existing EMBO members. EMBO will formally welcome the new members at the annual Meeting of EMBO community in Heidelberg in October 2024.

About Prof. Stefan Diez

Prof. Stefan Diez is a leading expert in biophysics. He earned his Ph.D. in physics from the Technical University of Berlin in 2000. Following a research placement at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, he relocated to Dresden to lead Optical Technology Development at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG). In 2004, he started his own research group at MPI-CBG, funded by the BMBF, focusing on molecular transport in cell biology and nanotechnology. His group transitioned to the B CUBE in 2010, when he was appointed as a DFG Heisenberg Professor for BioNanoTools at TU Dresden. Prof. Diez has received an ERC Starting Grant (2009-2014). He has been named a Max Planck Fellow (2019-2028) and a Fellow of the Max Planck School Matter to Life (2021-2025).

About European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO):

EMBO is an organization of more than 2,000 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. The goals of the organization are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.
EMBO helps young scientists to advance their research, promote their international visibility and ensure their mobility. Courses, workshops, conferences, and scientific journals disseminate the latest research and offer training in techniques to maintain high standards of excellence in research practice. EMBO helps to shape science and research policy by seeking input and feedback from our community and by following closely the trends in science in Europe.
In 2024, EMBO celebrates its 60th anniversary.
